Requires removing a core sample of material from the propeller mounting flange of certain crankshafts, and sending the core sample to TCM for evaluation.
This amendment supersedes emergency airworthiness directive (AD) 2000-08-51. Emergency AD 2000-08-51 was sent to all known U.S. owners and operators of Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) IO-360, TSIO- 360, LTSIO-360, O-470, IO-470, TSIO-470, IO-520, TSIO-520, LTSIO-520, IO-550, TSIO-550, and TSIOL-550 series reciprocating engines by individual letters. This amendment requires removing a core sample of material from the propeller mounting flange of certain crankshafts, and sending the core sample to TCM for evaluation. This amendment is prompted by reports of crankshaft failures, and by the addition of additional crankshaft serial numbers (SN) that have been added to the suspect population. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent fracture of the crankshaft connecting rod journal, which could result in total engine power loss, in-flight engine failure and possible forced landing.

This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD) that is applicable to Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) O-470, IO-470, TSIO- 470, IO-520, TSIO-520, LTSIO-520, GTSIO-520, IO-550, TSIO-550, and TSIOL-550 series reciprocating engines. This action supersedes priority letter AD 99-09-17 that currently requires a one-time visual and ultrasonic (UT) inspection of the No. 2 and No. 5 crankshaft cheeks for cracks. All crankshafts found with a cracked cheek must be replaced with a serviceable crankshaft prior to further flight. This action adds to the applicability TCM GTSIO-520 series engines and additional engines, identified by serial numbers (S/Ns), of currently affected engine series; references a revised service bulletin that clarifies snap ring installation; increases to 500 hours time-in-service (TIS) the cutoff for engines that require a more immediate inspection; and corrects the contact telephone number for TCM. This amendment is prompted by inspection results from the current priority letter AD. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent crankshaft failure due to crankshaft cheek cracks, which could result in total engine power loss, in-flight engine failure, and possible forced landing.

This amendment supersedes an existing airworthiness directive (AD), applicable to certain Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) IO-520 and TSIO-520 series reciprocating engines, that currently requires ultrasonic inspection for subsurface fatigue cracks in crankshafts installed in TCM IO-520 and TSIO-520 series engines and replacement of the crankshaft if a crack is found. This amendment adds a requirement to remove crankshafts manufactured using the airmelt process and replace them with crankshafts manufactured using the vacuum arc remelt (VAR) process, incorporates new ultrasonic inspection criteria in the AD, adds engine series TCM IO-360, TSIO-360, LTSIO-360, IO-520, LIO- 520, TSIO-520, LTSIO-520 and Rolls-Royce, plc IO-360 and TSIO-360 to the applicability, and revises the economic impact analysis. This amendment is prompted by reports of crankshaft failures due to subsurface fatigue cracking on engines that had been inspected in accordance with the current AD. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent crankshaft failure and subsequent engine failure.

Airworthiness Directives; Mooney Aircraft Corporation Model M20K Airplanes
This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD) that applies to Mooney Aircraft Corporation (Mooney) Model M20K airplanes with a Continental TSIO-520-NB engine installed in accordance with Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) SA5691NM. This action requires repetitively inspecting the exhaust transition tube and turbo mount assembly for cracks, and replacing any part found cracked. A report of a cracked exhaust transition tube that connects the exhaust manifolds to the turbocharger inlet on one of the affected airplanes prompted this action. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent exhaust gases from entering the cabin heating system because of a cracked exhaust transition tube, which, if not detected and corrected, could result in hazardous levels of carbon monoxide in the airplane cabin.

Airworthiness Directives; Teledyne Continental Motors IO-346, IO- 520, and IO-550 Series Reciprocating Engines
This amendment supersedes an existing airworthiness directive (AD), applicable to certain Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) IO-346, IO-520, and IO-550 series reciprocating engines, that currently requires initial and repetitive inspections of the engine mount brackets for cracks, and if found cracked, replacement with improved design engine mount brackets. All engine mount brackets require replacement with improved design engine mount brackets at the next engine removal after the effective date of that airworthiness directive (AD). This amendment clarifies the identification procedures to determine which engine mount brackets must be inspected. This amendment is prompted by reports that the engine mount bracket part numbers, which are ink stamped, can be easily obliterated. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent engine separation from the aircraft due to cracks in the engine mount brackets.
