The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Continental Aerospace Technologies, Inc. Airworthiness Directives; Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) and Rolls-Royce Motors Ltd. (R-RM) Series Reciprocating Engines
We are superseding an existing airworthiness directive (AD) for certain TCM and R-RM series reciprocating engines. That AD currently requires replacement of certain magnetos if they fall within the specified serial number (S/N) range, inspection of the removed magneto to verify that the stop pin is still in place, and, if the stop pin is not in place, inspection of the engine gear train, crankcase, and accessory case. This new AD corrects the range of S/Ns affected, requires the same replacement and inspections, and adds R-RM C-125, C- 145, O-300, IO-360, TSIO-360, and LTSIO-520-AE series reciprocating engines to the applicability. This AD was prompted by our awareness of an error in the previous AD applicability in the range of magneto S/Ns affected and of the need to include certain engines made by R-RM, under license of TCM. We are issuing this AD to prevent engine failure and loss of control of the airplane due to migration of the magneto impulse coupling stop pin out of the magneto frame and into the gear train of the engine.

The FAA is superseding an existing emergency airworthiness directive (AD) 2009-24-52 that was sent previously to all known U.S. owners and operators of TCM 240, 360, 470, 520, and 550 series reciprocating engines. That AD requires before further flight, replacing certain part number (P/N) hydraulic lifters. This AD results from TCM reporting another occurrence of rapid wear on the face of hydraulic lifters, P/Ns 657913, 657915, and 657916, and from the need to expand the applicability of this AD to include the TCM 346 series reciprocating engines and the R-RM IO-240-A reciprocating engines. We are issuing this AD to prevent excessive hydraulic lifter wear, which can result in loss of engine power and loss of control of the airplane.

The FAA is superseding an existing airworthiness directive (AD) for Lycoming Engines IO, (L)IO, TIO, (L)TIO, AEIO, AIO, IGO, IVO, and HIO series reciprocating engines, TCM TSIO-360-RB reciprocating engines, and Superior Air Parts, Inc. IO-360 series reciprocating engines with certain Precision Airmotive LLC RSA-5 and RSA-10 series fuel injection servos. That AD currently requires inspecting servo plugs for looseness and damage on fuel injection servos that have a servo plug gasket, part number (P/N) 365533, installed, and if loose, inspecting the servo regulator cover threads for damage, inspecting the gasket for damage, reinstalling acceptable parts, and torquing the servo plug to a new, higher torque to maintain the proper clamp-up force between the plug and cover. This AD requires the same inspections, except if the plug is found loose, servo plug gasket, P/N 365533, must be replaced with a new, improved gasket, P/N 2577258. This AD also requires replacement by December 31, 2009, of servo plug gaskets, P/N 365533, manufactured and made available on or after August 22, 2006, as mandatory terminating action to the repetitive inspections required by this AD. This AD also prohibits the installation of any servo plug gasket, P/N 365533. This AD also clarifies the TCM engine model applicability, and adds Bendix RSA-5 and RSA-10 series fuel injection servos to the applicability. This AD results from Precision Airmotive LLC introducing the installation of a new improved servo plug gasket, P/N 2577258, to the affected Precision Airmotive LLC RSA-5 and RSA-10 series, and Bendix RSA-5 and RSA-10 series, fuel injection servos. We are issuing this AD to prevent a lean running engine, which could result in a substantial loss of engine power and subsequent loss of control of the airplane.

This document makes a correction to airworthiness directive (AD) 97-26-17 applicable to certain Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) IO-520 and TSIO-520 engines that was published in the Federal Register on December 19, 1997 (62 FR 66502). The address information for the contact engineer in the For Further Information Contact section and the manufacturer's telephone number in the Addresses section and paragraph (f) of the Compliance Section is incorrect. This document corrects that information. In all other respects, the original document remains the same.
A correction restates part of an AD that was published incorrectly. It is
not an additional requirement and it does not change the AD number or its effective date.

This amendment supersedes an existing airworthiness directive (AD), applicable to certain Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) IO-520 and TSIO-520 series reciprocating engines, that currently requires ultrasonic inspection for subsurface fatigue cracks in crankshafts installed in TCM IO-520 and TSIO-520 series engines and replacement of the crankshaft if a crack is found. This amendment adds a requirement to remove crankshafts manufactured using the airmelt process and replace them with crankshafts manufactured using the vacuum arc remelt (VAR) process, incorporates new ultrasonic inspection criteria in the AD, adds engine series TCM IO-360, TSIO-360, LTSIO-360, IO-520, LIO- 520, TSIO-520, LTSIO-520 and Rolls-Royce, plc IO-360 and TSIO-360 to the applicability, and revises the economic impact analysis. This amendment is prompted by reports of crankshaft failures due to subsurface fatigue cracking on engines that had been inspected in accordance with the current AD. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent crankshaft failure and subsequent engine failure.

This document publishes in the Federal Register Airworthiness Directive (AD) 95-08-10 that was sent previously to all known U.S. owners and operators of Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) Model TSIO- 360 E, EB, F, FB, G, GB, KB, LB, MB, and Model LTSIO-360 E, EB, and KB reciprocating engines by individual letters. This AD requires replacement of the suspect turbocharger check valves prior to further flight, and prohibits special flight permits. This amendment is prompted by three reported engine failures caused by incorrectly assembled turbocharger oil outlet check valves, resulting in an improperly expanded rivet that held the check valve flapper assembly together as one unit. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent complete engine failure due to an incorrectly assembled turbocharger oil outlet check valve.
