GTSIO-520, IO-346, IO- 470, IO-520, IO-550, LTSIO-520, O-470, TSIO-520, and TSIOL-550 series model reciprocating engines, Lycoming Engines AEIO-320, AEIO-360, AEIO- 540, AIO-320, AIO-360, GO-480, GSO-480, HIO-360, HIO-540, IGO-480, IGO- 540, IGSO-480, IGSO-540, IO-320, IO-360, IO-540, LIO-360, LTIO-540, O- 235, O-320, O-360, O-540, TIGO-541, TIO-360, TIO-540, TIO-541, TVO-435, VO-435, and VO-540 series model reciprocating engines, and Textron Lycoming/Subsidiary of Textron, Inc. IO-720 series model reciprocating engines. This AD was prompted by a report of a manufacturing quality escape of improperly lubricated roller bearings installed in certain magnetos, which may result in overheating and magneto seizure. This AD requires the replacement of affected magneto or inspection of affected magneto and, if no white grease is detected, replacement of magneto components, as applicable, and reassembly of the magneto. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all Superior Air Parts, Inc. (SAP) Model IO-360-series and O-360-series reciprocating engines and certain Lycoming Engines (Lycoming) Model AEIO-360-, IO-360-, and O-360-series reciprocating engines with a certain SAP crankshaft assembly installed. This SAP crankshaft assembly is installed as original equipment on the affected SAP engines and as a replacement part under parts manufacturer approval (PMA) on the affected Lycoming engines. This AD was prompted by three crankshaft assembly failures that resulted in the loss of engine power and immediate or emergency landings. This AD requires the removal from service of all affected crankshaft assemblies. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

Airworthiness Directives; Lycoming Engines Reciprocating Engines

We are superseding an existing airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Lycoming Engines (L)O-360, (L)IO-360, AEIO-360, O-540, IO- 540, AEIO-540, (L)TIO-540, IO-580, and IO-720 series reciprocating engines. That AD currently requires replacing certain crankshafts in the affected engines. This AD continues to require replacing certain crankshafts, corrects the start date of affected engine models in Lycoming Mandatory Service Bulletin (MSB) No. 569A to the start date in Supplement No. 1 to Lycoming MSB No. 569A, dated May 27, 2009, and includes additional (formerly experimental) IO-390, AEIO-390, and AEIO- 580 series engine models having affected crankshafts. This AD was prompted by Lycoming Engines discovering that the start date of affected engine models in MSB No. 569A is incorrect and the need to include additional engine models having the affected crankshafts. We are issuing this AD to prevent failure of the crankshaft, which will result in total engine power loss, in-flight engine failure, and possible loss of the aircraft.

The FAA is superseding an existing airworthiness directive (AD) for Lycoming Engines IO, (L)IO, TIO, (L)TIO, AEIO, AIO, IGO, IVO, and HIO series reciprocating engines, TCM TSIO-360-RB reciprocating engines, and Superior Air Parts, Inc. IO-360 series reciprocating engines with certain Precision Airmotive LLC RSA-5 and RSA-10 series fuel injection servos. That AD currently requires inspecting servo plugs for looseness and damage on fuel injection servos that have a servo plug gasket, part number (P/N) 365533, installed, and if loose, inspecting the servo regulator cover threads for damage, inspecting the gasket for damage, reinstalling acceptable parts, and torquing the servo plug to a new, higher torque to maintain the proper clamp-up force between the plug and cover. This AD requires the same inspections, except if the plug is found loose, servo plug gasket, P/N 365533, must be replaced with a new, improved gasket, P/N 2577258. This AD also requires replacement by December 31, 2009, of servo plug gaskets, P/N 365533, manufactured and made available on or after August 22, 2006, as mandatory terminating action to the repetitive inspections required by this AD. This AD also prohibits the installation of any servo plug gasket, P/N 365533. This AD also clarifies the TCM engine model applicability, and adds Bendix RSA-5 and RSA-10 series fuel injection servos to the applicability. This AD results from Precision Airmotive LLC introducing the installation of a new improved servo plug gasket, P/N 2577258, to the affected Precision Airmotive LLC RSA-5 and RSA-10 series, and Bendix RSA-5 and RSA-10 series, fuel injection servos. We are issuing this AD to prevent a lean running engine, which could result in a substantial loss of engine power and subsequent loss of control of the airplane.

This document publishes in the Federal Register an amendment adopting emergency airworthiness directive (AD) 2008-06-51 that was sent previously to all known U.S. owners and operators of Lycoming Engines IO, (L)IO, TIO, (L)TIO, AEIO, AIO, IGO, IVO, and HIO series reciprocating engines, TCM TSIO-360-RB reciprocating engines, and Superior Air Parts, Inc. IO-360 series reciprocating engines with certain Precision Airmotive LLC RSA-5 and RSA-10 series fuel injection servos. The FAA supersedes Airworthiness Directive (AD) 79-20-08, which applies to all Great Lakes Aircraft Company, LLC, (Great Lakes) Models 2T-1A-1 and 2T-1A-2 airplanes with a Lycoming IO-360-B1F6 or AIO-360-B1G6 engine installed. AD 79-20-08 currently requires you to inspect the engine induction system and the alternate air door for any signs of damage and repairing or replacing any damaged components. AD 79-20-08 also requires you to inspect the induction system for the presence of a drain fitting. If the drain fitting is blocked, restricted, or does not exist, AD 79-20-08 requires you to clear the fitting or drill a hole in the elbow at the fitting location. This AD is the result of the FAA inadvertently omitting Lycoming engine AEIO- 360-B1G6 from the applicability section of AD 79-20-08. Consequently, this AD retains the actions required in AD 79-20-08 and adds Lycoming engine AEIO-360-B1G6 to the applicability section. We are issuing this AD to prevent the aircraft induction system from becoming blocked or restricted, which could result in engine failure. This failure could lead to loss of control of the airplane.

Airworthiness Directives; Certain Textron Lycoming 320 and 360 Series Reciprocating Engines

This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD), applicable to certain Textron Lycoming 320 and 360 series reciprocating engines, that requires visual inspections of the inside diameter (ID) of the crankshaft for corrosion pits, and if corrosion pits are found during this inspection, prior to further flight, performing a magnetic particle inspection (MPI) or fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) of the ID for cracks. In addition, this AD requires reporting findings of inspections to the FAA. Finally, terminating action to the inspections of this AD is the application of a preventive treatment coating on non- corroded crankshafts to prevent corrosion. This amendment is prompted by reports of cracks in crankshafts originating from corrosion pits in the ID. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent crankshaft failure, which can result in engine failure, propeller separation, forced landing, and possible damage to the aircraft.

This amendment revises an existing airworthiness directive (AD), applicable to Sensenich Propeller Manufacturing Company Inc. Models M76EMM, M76EMMS, 76EM8, and 76EM8S() metal propellers, that currently restricts operators from continuously operating the propeller at engine speeds from 2,150 to 2,350 revolutions per minute (RPM) and specifies propeller inspection and rework or replacement. This amendment eliminates the requirement to add tachometer markings on aircraft with certain additional Textron Lycoming O-360 series reciprocating engines with solid crankshafts installed, and updates the referenced Sensenich Propeller Company Inc. service bulletin to the latest revision. Reworking of all affected propeller models remains a requirement of the AD, regardless of engine installation. This amendment is prompted by inquiries concerning tachometer red arc restrictions on certain Textron Lycoming O-360 series reciprocating engines with solid crankshafts. The actions specified by this AD are intended to prevent propeller blade tip fatigue failure, which can result in loss of control of the aircraft.
